History of Super Falcons of Nigeria
Super Falcons is the name for Nigeria national women's football team, the team have shown active participation in some of their featured competitive tournaments.
They took part in 2003 and 2007 when they faced the 'group of death' in which they were grouped with historic women's superpower like the USA, traditional European power Sweden and Asian power North Korea.
The team in spite of their inability to overcome basic developmental challenges in Olympic Games or FIFA World Cup won a medal in 2016 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations on Saturday 3rd December 2016 by defeating the Indomitable Lioness of Cameroon. That was their third time of defeating Cameroon to win the AWCON finals; they did the same in 2004 and 2014.
The junior team of the Nigeria national women's football team known as the Falconets (Under 20) showcased an unbelievable performance during the 2006 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup that was held in Russia when they piped off Russia with 8 – 0 score.
Nigeria national women's football team, Super Falcons has been participating in World Cup since 1991, however, they have been making poor records except on one occasion when they finished among the top eight. Similarly, they have tried taking the lead in FIFA Women's World Cup or the Olympic Games but to no avail.
Recently in 2018, The Super Falcons of Nigeria defeated Mali at the inaugural West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Women’s Cup in Cote d’Ivoire on Saturday, 24th February. They gained victory over Mali to win a bronze medal.
